Action Planning

The Talking Heads asked, “Well, how did I get here?”

How do you get from here to there?

You’ve set a goal. Now what?

Often, goals are based on an aspiration, an abstract idea of what we want to do or be.

We start with good intentions and then feel overwhelmed by the distance to the goal.

To stay on track to your goal, begin by asking yourself how you will:

  • Know when I have reached the goal

  • Break the goal into smaller actionable steps to make it more manageable and less overwhelming

  • Set realistic deadlines to create a sense of urgency and maintain momentum

  • Incorporate regular review of progress so that action steps can be adjusted as necessary

  • Invite support and encouragement for accountability

  • Celebrate progress to stay motivated and inspired

The key to action planning is to break down goals into doable, concrete steps. Mapping out a strategy of achievable tasks reminds us of our next steps toward the goal, reducing mental energy. Having a plan is motivating, but it needs to be realistic and doable. You cannot add new activities to your lives without sacrificing something you currently do.

Maintaining motivation is vital too. Accountability and celebrating successes along the way can serve as strong motivators. Some individuals excel at holding themselves accountable, regularly checking in and assessing whether they are meeting their goals. If you are not one of those people, consider finding an accountability partner—a friend, relative, or coach to routinely check in with and help strategize next steps, keeping in mind that in the end the actions or lack of action which you take is your decision. Celebrating your accomplishments each step of the way by acknowledging your achievements and effort reinforces your capabilities and determination to reach your goals.
