Change Cycle

With January in the rearview mirror, where do you want to be a year from now?

Do you want to make a change or take on a new challenge?

Do you want to feel more fulfilled, or are you content?

I created the above diagram to show what happens when we feel discontent and reach a breaking point. We want to make a change, but if limiting beliefs, insecurities, excuses, and procrastination take over, we end up in the Fear Trap (right circle) that produces a form of amnesia until our feelings of discontent resurface. This cycle repeats unless we disrupt it by taking action toward a goal (left circle).

If you want to make a change, ask yourself where you want to be in a year. The first step is defining a realistic goal and identifying actions to reach it. Taking action is the critical next step, as important as reflecting on its results to refine ongoing action. Along the way, we need to celebrate successes and analyze failures to learn from them. Ongoing support and feedback through this process lend encouragement and accountability.

Where do you want to be in a year or five?
